A novel coupling method for unresolved CFD-DEM modeling

In CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method) simulations particles are considered Lagrangian point particles. The details of the flow near particle surface therefore not fully resolved. When scale is larger than resolved scale, coupling between CFD model and DEM critical. An effective scheme should minimize risk artificial influences on results from choices numerical parameters in implementations consider efficiency robustness. this work, a novel method developed. includes both smoothing data sampling gas phase quantities. employs diffusion-based method. can reconstruct filtered quantities at center. developed based with higher efficiency. new avoids mesh searching it be easily implemented parallel computing. validated by simulation forced convection experiment for fixed bed steel spheres. With well-posed grid-independent scheme, good agreement experimental measurements. effects computational cost discussed detail.
